La leggenda del coniglio sulla luna
Vi siete mai fermati a osservare attentamente la luna piena?
Sulla superficie lunare ci sono delle enormi macchie scure che secondo la tradizione giapponese rappresentano la figura di un coniglio che pesta del riso in un mortaio per preparare del mochi.
Questa operazione, con cui viene tradizionalmente creato il mochi, si chiama mochitsuki (餅つき – pestaggio del mochi). Per chi fosse curioso, vi allego questo video in cui si può ammirare l’operazione:
Qui troviamo il primo gioco di parole che si lega a questa leggenda. La parola “tsuki”, se scritta con un kanji diverso, significa proprio Luna (月).
Per chi non lo conoscesse, il mochi è questa gommosa pasta di riso alla base di molti dolci giapponesi.
Ma veniamo alla leggenda che collega i conigli al nostro amato satellite.
Si racconta che tanti anni fa, in un bosco del Giappone, vivessero tre amici: un coniglio, una volpe ed una scimmia.
Un bel giorno, un Dio scese dal cielo, prendendo le sembianze di un povero vecchio e decise di visitare il Giappone. Passando dal bosco in cui vivevano i tre amici, si fermò esausto ed affamato per riposare.
Quando i tre amici si trovarono a passare nei pressi della pietra su cui era seduto il vecchio, gli si avvicinarono per rassicurarsi sulle sue condizioni e il vecchio disse loro: “Ho viaggiato molto e sono stanco, potrei avere qualcosa da mangiare?”
E così, i tre amici si misero alla ricerca di cibo.
La scimmia fu la prima a tornare con della frutta, mentre la volpe arrivo subito dopo portando con sé dei pesci catturati in un vicino stagno.
Dopo una lunga attesa, fece ritorno anche il coniglio che, a mani vuote, si rivolse al vecchio dicendo: “Perdonami, ma io non sono in grado di arrampicarmi sugli alberi per raccogliere frutti e non sono nemmeno abile nel catturare pesci come ha fatto la volpe”.
Rattristato per non essere riuscito ad aiutare il vecchio ebbe un’idea e chiese ai suoi amici di portargli dei ramoscelli e delle foglie secche.
A quel punto accese un fuoco e disse: “Non essendo riuscito a portarti altro, ti offrirò me stesso!”
E così saltò nel fuoco sacrificando la sua vita davanti agli sguardi increduli del vecchio e dei due amici.
Davanti a questa scena, il Dio decise di manifestarsi, e togliendo il coniglio dal fuoco disse: “Sono un Dio sceso dal cielo per visitare le vostre terre e mettere alla prova il vostro altruismo. Il vostro amico coniglio ha sacrificato la sua vita per aiutarmi e, in segno di gratitudine, lo porterò con me nella mia dimora sulla luna, dove voi potrete ammirarlo per l’eternità durante le notti di luna piena”.
Per via di questa leggenda è molto frequente trovare il coniglio raffigurato sempre insieme alla luna su qualunque oggetto o tessuto decorato. Durante uno dei miei viaggi, tra le stradine del centro di Takayama, avevo trovato un negozio che vendeva oggettistica esclusivamente a tema “conigliesco”
Vi citerò anche un paio di esempi di quanto sia facile trovare riferimenti a questa associazione tra luna e conigli anche nei manga. Basti, ad esempio, pensare al nome al nome di Sailor Moon (Moon/Luna) che è Usagi Tsukino. Tsuki no Usagi (月の兔) significa proprio Coniglio della Luna. Oppure nei primissimi episodi di Dragonball, quando Goku incontra la banda del coniglio e a fine episodio li spedisce sulla luna a preparare il mochi.
Nella prossima notte di luna piena, se guarderete in cielo, sono certo che non farete fatica a scorgere la figura del coniglio che picchia il riso nel mortaio.
